Willet

The Willet (Scientific name - Tringa semipalmata) is a fairly large shorebird that is found in both the Eastern and Western parts of North America. The Eastern and Western species differ in plumage, breeding habits and migration.

The bird in the photos is an Eastern variety of the Willet.  Eastern Willets breed from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean and winter on the Atlantic Coast of South America as far South as Brazil. The Western variety breeds in freshwater marshes in North America and winter as far South as Peru.

Top three photos were taken in March 2011 in Brevard County, Florida. Bottom photo taken at Pass-A-Grill Beach, St. Petersberg, Florida in August 2016.
